The Best Coffee Shops in Honolulu
A coffee lover's guide to the one place in America where the beans are grown at home.
Honolulu has a coffee distinction no mainland city can claim: Hawaii is the only U.S. state that grows coffee commercially. The most famous is Kona, grown on the volcanic slopes of the Big Island, but you'll also find beans from O'ahu, Maui, and Kaua'i. That makes Honolulu the rare place where "local coffee" can be taken literally — and where a great cafe is also a window into a real agricultural origin.
One insider note that will instantly make you a smarter buyer: look for "100% Kona" or "100% Hawaiian." A "Kona blend" is legally allowed to contain as little as 10% Kona, with the rest imported. If you want the real thing, read the label or ask.
What Honolulu coffee is like
A blend of island casualness and genuine specialty craft. The best cafes pour single-origin Hawaiian beans with pride, often as a clean pour-over so you can actually taste the origin, and the climate means iced drinks are a year-round staple.
The neighborhoods worth your time
- Kaka'ako — the modern, mural-covered district with the densest cluster of hip independent cafes.
- Kaimuki — a low-key local neighborhood full of small, beloved cafes and eateries.
- Chinatown / Downtown — historic and artsy, with cafes among the galleries.
- Waikiki — touristy, but convenient if you're staying nearby; venture out for the better local spots.
What to order
Order a 100% Hawaiian or Kona coffee as a pour-over or drip — that's the whole point of drinking coffee here, and the way to actually taste it. In the heat, an iced version (or a smooth cold brew) is the everyday move.
A few honest tips
- Insist on "100% Kona" or "100% Hawaiian" — avoid "Kona blend," which is mostly not Kona.
- Kaka'ako and Kaimuki are where to find the best independent cafes.
- Step a few blocks beyond Waikiki for cups locals actually drink.
